NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC) Admiral Cavo Dragone and the Ambassadors of the North Atlantic Council visited Kyiv on Wednesday (3 June 2026).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined for a historic meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council (NUC), which was the first NUC to take place in Ukraine. “This, in itself, sends a strong message of the enduring bond between NATO and Ukraine”, said the Secretary General after the meeting. “It is important for us to be here, where Ukrainians young and old continue to stand together – with courage and conviction that their freedom is worth fighting for.” President Zelenskyy, the NATO Secretary General, CMC and the Ambassadors also participated in a ceremony to pay their respect to Ukraine’s fallen defenders.

While in Kyiv, the Secretary General and CMC visited one of the sites of Russia’s recent attacks – a civilian shopping centre and subway station in Lukianivka – where they were briefed on the destruction by the Head of the State Emergency Service, Mr Andrii Danyk. The Secretary General and CMC also met with the Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov, to discuss Ukraine’s military priorities. Following the NUC meeting, the Ambassadors engaged with Ukrainian military commanders, industry representatives, and Members of Parliament. The visit concluded with a visit to the Saint Sophia Cathedral, hosted by the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrii Sybiha.
