A moment of great
tragedy and mourning
The North Atlantic Council has expressed its deepest sympathy and solidarity
to the United States and resolutely condemned the barbaric terrorist acts
committed against the American people in New York and Washington D.C.
on 11 September. At a special meeting on the evening of 11 September,
the NATO allies declared that the
United States can rely on their support and assistance. NATO Secretary General,
Lord Robertson condemned the attacks "in the strongest possible
terms" and firmly underlined "the need for the international
community and the members of the Alliance to unite their forces in fighting
the scourge of terrorism".
