NATO-Russia Rally to take place in Russia

Relations between NATO and Russia have developed dynamically since the establishment of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) at the Rome summit in 2002. Russia and the member states of NATO are now implementing a rich menu of practical cooperation projects, involving thousands of civilian and military experts, to address the key common security challenges of today – including terrorism, proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, regional instability . The 27 countries making up the NRC also engage in an open, vigorous and regular political dialogue.

On 28 April 2006, at a meeting of NATO-Russia Council foreign ministers in Sofia, a document was adopted outlining ambitious recommendations for priorities in the further development of NATO-Russia relations. One of those recommendations was to work together to bring the reality of our partnership closer to ordinary people in our countries.

From 11-26 May 2006 a series of public events will unfold across the Russian Federation under the title: NATO-Russia Rally 2006: What binds us together. Starting in Vladivostok and ending in Kaliningrad, a variety of seminars, conferences, exhibitions, debates and cultural events will be organised in different locations. The Rally will bring together NATO, Allied and Russian officials, experts, public figures ready to discuss and share views on the current opportunities and future prospects of the NRC. Wide-ranging participation of young people, students, academics and media is expected and encouraged.

The itinerary of the Rally will be as follows: 11 May - Vladivostok, 12 May – Novosibirsk,13 May – Yekaterinburg, 15 May – Samara, 17 May – Volgograd, 18 May – Moscow, 22 May – Murmansk, 24 May – Pskov, 26 May – Kaliningrad.

The overall organisation of the Rally rests with the Public Diplomacy Division of the NATO HQ, represented in Russia by the NATO Information Office (NIO) in Moscow. Our main Russian partner for the project is the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Events at separate “city stops” will be sponsored and implemented by different Allied embassies and consulates, aided by local Russian authorities and institutions.

A detailed programme of the Rally, together with coverage of unfolding events in different cities will be posted on the NATO website www.nato.int/russia. A specially established blog (www.natorussiarally.blogspot.com) will also allow for an interactive engagement in all events.

For further information on the Rally please contact the NIO Press Officer Ms Irina Golovina (+7 495 937 36 40 office, +7 495 937 3809 fax, + 7 495 970 22 37 mobile, i.golovina@nio-moscow.nato.int) or the NATO Press Service in Brussels.
