Chapter 17: Standardization and Interoperability Definition Within NATO, standardization is the process of developing concepts, doctrines, procedures and designs to achieve and maintain the most effective level of standardization in the fields of operations, administration and materiel. The levels of standardization are in ascending order compatibility, interoperability, interchangeability and commonality.
