Air Lieutenant General Nihat KÖKMEN was born in Eskişehir/Sivrihisar in 1959. After completing his primary education in Şafaktepe (Ankara) Primary School, secondary and high school education in Sincan, he joined the Air Force Academy in 1977. He was appointed to the Air Force with the rank of 2nd lieutenant when he graduated from Air Force Academy  on August 30, 1981.

After completing his Flight and Combat Training at 2nd Main Jet Flight Training Command and 3rd Main Jet Base relatively, he was assigned to 143rd Squadron at 4th Main Jet Base for his F-104 Combat Training in May,1983. Upon his training he assumed the duty of wingman at 161st Squadron in January, 1984 and 162nd Squadron in June, 1989 after the activation of F-16 aircraft.

He attended Air War College in 1992 and graduated in 1994 then he assumed the duty of Section head at Operations Planning Section in 2nd Air Force Command Operations Division. He assumed the duty of Operations officer in 182nd Squadron in 1996 and in 1999 followed by the modernization with F-16 aircraft he became the squadron commander. He was assigned to an active duty in Kosovo Operation when his squadron deployed to Italy. He assumed the duty of Academic Planning Officer in Operations Division at HQ, NATO Agreements planning officer at TGS then he became Air Planning Officer at SHAPE between 2001-2004. Following that duty, he was assigned to 6th Main Jet Base Command as the Chief of Evaluations and Operations Commander. He then was promoted to Brigadier General on August 30, 2006 and assumed the duty of the Chief of Personnel Department at HQ.

He assumed the duty of 8th Main Jet Base Commander on August 04, 2008 and was promoted to Major General on August 04, 2010. He was assigned to MOD Deputy Undersecretary as well as National Armaments Director. He assumed the duty of 1st Air Force Vice Commander in August, 2012 and the Chief of Plans and Principles Division in August, 2013. He was promoted to Lieutenant General on August 07, 2014 and assumed the duty of Air Defence Commander at Combatant Air Force and Air Missile Defence Command. He served as a Air Force Chief of Staff between 2016-2017.

Father’s name is İbrahim, mother’s name is Azime. He is married to Mrs.Ayşenur with two sons.
