Josef Janning is Director of Studies at the European Policy Centre. Born and raised in Germany, he studied Political Science, International Relations and Modern History at universities in Germany and the United States. He holds a BA in International Relations from Elmira College, New York, and a MA in Political Science from Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn.

Prior to his current position, he was Senior Director for International and Global Affairs at the Bertelsmann Stiftung in Germany. Earlier positions included serving as Deputy Director of the Center for Applied Policy Research at Munich University and heading the Research Group on Europe at Mainz University.

He has held teaching positions at the University of Mainz, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and currently is a guest professor at the Renmin University of Beijing. He has been, and is, Chairman and member of various international study groups, high-level groups and commissions on European affairs, East-West and Mediterranean issues, security policies and transatlantic relations.  He has written numerous publications, articles, comments and reviews on European and international affairs, German foreign policy - as well as that of other European states - security policy, transatlantic relations and global affairs.
