The Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) will conduct from 19 to 24 May 2007 the disaster response exercise “Idassa 2007” in the coastal Zadar county of Croatia.

Twenty-one Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) nations will participate in the exercise,  by deploying some 40 national expert teams each with the expertise and capability to deal with a different aspect of the fictitious emergency situation. All together, approximately 1,000 participants, including more than 120 observers from 35 countries will take part in the event.

“Idassa 2007”  will allow NATO and Partner countries to practice disaster response mechanisms and capabilities and to enhance co-operation in emergency situations. The exercise scenario was designed to test best practices of how to respond a natural disaster and a terrorist threat at the same time, providing an opportunity for civilian responders and military units to work together.

The fictional scenario for the field exercise will comprise a devastating earthquake, further aggravated by chemical leaks in an industrial seaport and a threat of terrorists using a biological agent onboard a passenger plane.

Through this exercise, NATO and Partner nations will practice the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) procedures and Euro-Atlantic Response Unit (EADRU) capabilities in order to improve EAPC nations’ ability to respond to a disaster. The exercise will also contribute to strengthen the stricken nation’s capability to effectively coordinate consequence management operations, including international assistance in a demanding emergency situation. Finally,  “Idassa 2007” will enable participating nations to exercise the use of the EAPC Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) inventory of disaster response capabilities.

The exercise will include a training programme and a command post exercise to be held on 20 May 2007, followed by three days of field activities. On 24 May 2007, a joint demonstration will be conducted, where national and  international teams will present their special competence and equipment

The Exercise “Idassa 2007” is a Croatian contribution in the framework of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) will also participate in the exercise.

Since 2000, this is the seventh international field exercise conducted by the

Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC.).
