NATO Deputy Secretary General stresses there is no substitute to the transatlantic relationship
Speaking at a Friends of Europe event today (13 October 2020), NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană emphasised that the bond between Europe and North America is still essential. “I do believe there is no substitute to the transatlantic bond,” he said.
The Deputy Secretary General highlighted that NATO-EU cooperation makes the world safer, and that NATO and the EU need to continue to complement each other. He pointed out that 80% of defence spending in NATO is by non-EU members, and yet 90% of the EU population live in a NATO member state.
