NATO celebrates 50 years in Brunssum

Today (31 May 2017), NATO personnel joined local citizens in celebrating 50 years since the Alliance first came to Brunssum, the Netherlands. Allied Joint Force Command headquarters in Brunssum provides operational control of NATO’s mission in Afghanistan, oversees command of NATO’s Response Force, and oversees NATO’s new enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance. Numerous Dutch dignitaries attended the ceremony, led by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. Dutch Defence Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and Theo Bovens, Governor of Limburg, were also in attendance. NATO was represented by Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, as well as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Curtis Scaparrotti.
