NATO Secretary General to discuss Wales Summit with US President
NATO Secretary General, Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen will discuss preparations for this September’s Summit in Wales and the implications of Russia’s actions in Ukraine on Allied security with President Barack Obama during a three-day visit to the United States starting on Monday (7 July 2014).
At the Wales Summit, NATO will reaffirm its commitment to collective defence and take further steps to ensure that the Alliance is prepared to face any threat, with the right resources, capabilities and training. The Summit will also turn a new page in relations with Afghanistan, with the ISAF combat mission due to be completed at the end of this year and ongoing preparations for a new, NATO-led non combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces after 2014. The Summit will also be an important opportunity to enhance NATO’s cooperation with partners around the world and strengthen NATO’s ability to assist partners that need help in defence and security sector reform.
During his visit, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen will deliver a speech at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington on the importance of a strong transatlantic bond in an unpredictable world. He will also give a speech at the Marine's Memorial Club in San Francisco on the need to reinforce the rules-based international order. He will hold a range of meetings with business and community leaders, members of the Commonwealth Club and the World Affairs Council of Northern California.
