On 18 November 2008, the NATO Naval Armaments Group (NNAG) celebrated its 50th anniversary by organizing a seminar and exhibition. “Navigating innovation”, the exhibition “illustrates the important work the NNAG conducts with industry to meet the challenges of today – such as NATO’s involvement in anti-piracy deterrence patrols - and the future”, said Mr. Peter Flory, Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment.
The purpose of the NNAG is to further NATO’s naval armaments cooperation and planning in maritime operations. Throughout the last 50 years, NNAG has provided the framework for several cooperation programmes, such as the NATO Sea Sparrow Missile, the NH 90 Helicopter and the NATO Submarine Rescue System. More recently, the NNAG has focused on Maritime Situational Awareness, Defence against Terrorism and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In order to fulfil these objectives, the NNAG acts through a network of NATO committees, where information is exchanged on new military requirements and emerging technologies.
The NNAG actively supports NATO’s partnership policies by promoting cooperative security. Besides NATO allies, Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries, as well as Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) and Contact Countries have been included in the activities of the NNAG. Industry participants at the exhibition included Boeing, Raytheon and Thales.
