Discussing NATO-Serbia Partnership and Kosovo

NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Belgrade on 13 July to hold talks with the Serbian leadership. He had meetings with President Tadic, Prime Minister Kostunica, and the Foreign and Defence Ministers.

The discussions focused on two main issues.  First, the NATO Secretary General and the Serb leadership discussed the broader NATO-Serbia Partnership.  The Serb leadership expressed their expectation that the formal documents taking this relationship forward would soon be ready for transmission from Belgrade to NATO.

Kosovo was another main topic of discussion. The NATO Secretary General expressed to his interlocutors his belief in the need to avoid any unnecessary delays in the status process, and that the resolution should be on the basis of the Ahtisaari proposals.

The Serb leadership expressed their continued determination to continue working closely with KFOR; the NATO Secretary General repeated that KFOR would continue to protect all communities in Kosovo against violence.
