Russian Federation Ship Pitliviy Continues Preparations to Join NATO Operation Active Endeavour
Naples, 15 May 2006. The Russian Federation frigate RFS Pitliviy will conduct Mission Oriented Training with NATO from 19 May to 4 June 2006 to continue preparations for participation in NATO's anti-terrorism operation Active Endeavour (OAE). Crewmembers of the frigate already successfully completed an initial at-sea training period while on board RFS Moskva during a Mediterranean deployment in February. The upcoming OAE training event will build on previous experience, extending beyond joint maritime maneuvering to include compatibility of systems, familiarization with NATO standard procedures, and handling of classified information. Under the Command of Capt (2 ranks) Sergey Tronev, on 19 May the RFS Pitliviy will embark in La Spezia (Italy) the core of a NATO Mobile Training Team led by the Allied Maritime Component Command Naples (CC-Mar Naples). During the following at-sea training the frigate will also briefly stop on 20 May in the Bay of Naples to conduct a coordination visit at CC-Mar Headquarters Naples. Training will continue with assistance from the NATO frigate HMS Nottingham, which will act as host ship and training partner for RFS Pitliviy during a port visit at Souda (Greece) and the subsequent at-sea training phase. Operation Active Endeavour is NATO's maritime contribution to the fight against terrorism. Launched in October 2001, it continues to conduct surveillance and monitoring operations of the major shipping lanes of the Mediterranean. In 2004, NATO decided to enlist the support of partner nations, Mediterranean Dialogue countries and other selected nations. In December 2004, an Exchange of Letters between the Russian Federation and NATO paved the way for joint training activities that will lead to the Black Sea Fleet's first deployment for Operation Active Endeavour.
